COLD WAR
At a time when the potential loss of life from a failed nuclear gambit went beyond rational comprehension, conventional wasfare was seen by some to be the last best hope of preserving their ways of living. The war of political rhetoric and posturing that had been raging for nearly four decades was about to come to an end. In it's wake though, ther would be no quick peace. The time for brinksmanship was past. Now the children of the Cold War would see the heat of the battle. Securing sources of oil and trade shipping routes were key factors in the forging of the wartime alliance between the Soviets, the Chinese, and assorted lesser Pacific Rim countries. Opposing this coalition, the United States, Japanese, Canadian, Australian and European governments fight to remove the perceived threats to their economies. Most of the smaller countries around the world do not rush to the call for war. They saw that for them, the path to their best possible victory was to not get involved.

GLOBAL CONFLICTS
I As the world shifts away from the familiar bi-polar power structures [NATO vs PACT], decades old alliances and rivalries are being re-examined and found wanting. The counter-revolutions have torn down the hated coldwar order and replaced it with... anarchy. Here then we lay our scene; in a world rife with civil war and UN interventions. Some countries are forced by hungry citizens to sell off their greast arsenals for bread. Others see the opportunity to strike at hated neighbors, and buy up whole airforces and navies from those who can no longer afford to keep them. Still other proclaim a "new world order" and begin dismantling theirs. With rabid nationalism, economic hardship and interlocking obligations, the world once again begins to resemble pre-World War I Europe.

GLOBAL CONFLICTS II
The fascination and lure of the What-If has long been a driving forces in our imaginations. The musings about how an as yet unrealized situation might be resolved have sparked countless hours of argument and debate. Deep into this rich loam of speculationm we will now plant our designs and postulates to witness what will grow. The power of the computer to model in simulation what has not occured in reality is nearly without limit. In these BattleSets, Global Conflicts 2 and Global Conflicts 3, many different What-If scenarios are presented. They span the globe, involve the Naval and Air assets from many countries, and they take place on unique timelines. Global Conflicts 2 illustrates a variety of larger scale operations that assume some manner of larger war between the NATO and Warsaw PACT countries. This BattleSet favors the multi-carrier confrontations with all of their grand struggles. In Global Conflicts 3, we see the evolution of a series of much smaller, compact engagements. In this BattleSet, the coherent timeline, on such a very short scale, is indicative of rapid reaction and deployment. To each thrust, its counter thrust.

REGIONAL CONFLICTS II
UNDER CONSTRUCTION As the desert winds continually reshape the land, so too the ever-present hand of war draws and redraws the political boundaries in the Middle East. On March 3, 1999, a fishing boat on a course for the Iranian coast ignores the requests to halt and be boarded. Assuming it to be a smuggler, the Iranian coastal patrol sinks it. Upon inspection of the wreckage announces that the vessel was on an espionage mission sanctioned by Oman. Hostillities between the two nations rise, unabated by all diplomatic attempts. Open war erupts within days. Memories of Iraqi aggression four years earlier push Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to mobilize, and within weeks the entire region is involved. The oil fields are burning once more. Protecting political and economic interests in the region, the U.S and allies send a large carrier group to the Gulf. As oil prices across the globe skyrocket, U.S. troops march once more across the desert sands.

WESTPAC BATTLESET
With the end of the cold war, many nations turn into new directions. Increased nationalism and the revival of old antagonisms create a dangerous combination. The Western Pacific is bordered by a wide variety of countries with different languages, cultures, economics and agendas. Many of these countries are old antagonists with histories of competition and warfare. This Battle Set focuses on potential hot spots in the Western Pacific region.
